Preparing for your Ultrasound

There’s a few things you need to do to make sure your ultrasound is as accurate as possible. Please read thoroughly below!

Preparing For Your Ultrasound

Not all ultrasound screenings require preparation.

  • If your scan is NOT listed below, there is no action that needs to be taken prior to exam.
  • If your exam IS listed, please take note of the following instructions.

Breast Scans

  • If breastfeeding, please nurse/pump at least 1 hour prior to exam. 
  • Bring last mammogram or ultrasound report with you (if available).

Abdomen & Abdominal Aorta Scans

  • No eating, drinking, chewing, or smoking after midnight the night before the exam OR a minimum of 8 HOURS prior to exam.
  • If medically necessary, medications may be taken with a small sip of water.

Pelvic Scans

  • One to two hours prior to your exam, drink 32 ounces of water.
  • Please have a FULL BLADDER (do not empty your bladder before your exam). 

Renal & Bladder

  • Adequate hydration is recommended.

Obstetric FIRST TRIMESTER

  • Please have a full bladder (do not empty bladder prior to your exam). 

What to Wear To Your Appointment

  • Clothing will be moved or removed in the areas to be imaged. We will provide a privacy cover to use when possible.
  • Jewelry will be removed for the scan – you may remove them in our office prior to imaging or (best) leave them at home

What to Expect During Your Ultrasound

  • Your appointment will take approximately 20-45 minutes.
  • You will be asked to remove all clothing in the areas to be imaged. We will supply you with a lightweight covering for privacy.
  • Prior to your scan, we will review your intake form with you and answer any questions you may have.
  • Ultrasound images will be obtained.
  • Following your scan, your images will be sent to a radiologist for interpretation.
  • Reports are normally back within 5-7 days.
